FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                 May 25, 2007

Release No. M-54-07

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced today that the City’s Department of Transportation Services, the Honolulu Police Department and the management of the Kam Super Swap Meet have reached an agreement aimed at providing traffic congestion relief during swap meet hours.

Under the agreement, the Swap Meet management will be opening the Ewa driveway on Moanalua Road, just east of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Chucrch, as an “Entrance Only” driveway.

“This should help to relieve the traffic congestion at the Kaonohi Street intersection as Swap Meet traffic will have an alternate entrance,” said Mayor Hannemann.  “I’m happy we are able to come up with this solution in response to concerns expressed by area residents.”

Additionally, the management company has agreed to have the special duty officer who is normally posted at the Kaonohi Street entrance relocated to the southwest corner of Kaonohi Street and Moanalua Road.  The officer will monitor the intersection and may manually direct traffic should the need arise.  The officer’s presence should also be a deterrent to traffic violations.

The changes are expected to be in place beginning tomorrow.
