SECOND ANNUAL AGRICULTURE EVENT TO BE HELD THURSDAY

“2008 Ag in the City: Grown on Oahu

Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, and the Oahu Resource Conservation & Development, Service (ORC&D) are sponsoring the second annual “Ag in the City: Grown on Oahu,” an agricultural awareness day, on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Fasi Civic Center Grounds.

This educational event will showcase Oahu’s diverse agricultural industry and highlight the many partnerships that the island’s agriculture community has developed to help build a sustainable future for Hawaii.

“Agriculture continues to be vital to our island’s future, and it’s important for all of us to truly understand all the good work that so many people are doing to make agriculture successful,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “The City is committed to strengthening the agriculture industry on Oahu.”

The event will include a brief program at noon with remarks by Mayor Hannemann; Dean Okimoto, President, Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation and Owner, Nalo Farms; and Larry Yamamoto, Director of the Pacific Islands Area, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. The Mayor will also present a check for an agricultural grant to the ORC&D.

To promote local agriculture and a healthy lifestyle, there will be a Farmers’ Market sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. All produce and products will be locally grown and/or produced on Oahu. Proceeds will be donated to a local charity. At the exhibit, samples of products will be available.
