HONOLULU NAMED FINALIST FOR INVESTMENT AWARD

 

The City and County of Honolulu has been named one of six national finalists for PLANSPONSOR’s Excellence in Alternative Investment (“Alties”) award for Institutional Investors.

PLANSPONSOR, the retirement plan industry’s premier information resource, said it is pleased to honor with its Alties awards those institutional investors, consultants and investment managers that have provided best in class strategies and solutions in the alternative investment space.

The Alties acknowledge not just investment performance, but also strategies and outcomes that reflect the best institutional programs of the year.  Finalists were drawn from nominations in several distinct categories, including: Institutional Investor/Endowment or Foundation; Institutional Investor/Taft-Hartley; Institutional Investor/Corporate Plan; Institutional Investor/Public Plan; and Consultant.

The finalists for the Institutional Investor/Public Plan category are:

 

  • City and County of Honolulu,
  • the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS),
  • the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS),
  • the Florida State Board of Administration,
  • Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund, and
  • the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

“Being selected as a finalist for Public Plan category is a great honor for the City in its efforts to provide the best Plan options and strategies for its deferred compensation participants,” said Mary Pat Waterhouse, Honolulu’s Director of Budget and Fiscal Services and Chairperson of the Deferred Compensation Committee. “We are the only City or County to be recognized.”

 

The City’s Deferred Compensation 457 Plan is a voluntary program that allows employees to save additional funds for after employment use.  Although it is a strictly a government plan, it has features that would be considered similar to a 401K Plan.

 

The finalists will be honored and the winners in each category announced on December 3, 2008 at the Ritz Carlton, Battery Park, New York, NY.
