Action Results in Successful Pearl Harbor Bike Path Cleanup

 

The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) and 402 participants from over 30 organizations successfully completed the Pearl Harbor Bike Path Cleanup last Saturday. 

A total of 150 tires, 12 batteries, 72 pieces of metal, 150 trash bags and 2.5 cubic yards of green waste were collected along 13.5-mile section of the bike path from Aiea to Kapakahi Stream in Waipahu.

“In 2007, ENV, along with the U.S. Navy Region, State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, City and County of Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance, City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, Honolulu Police Department (HPD) Community Policing, Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), Hawaii Laborers’ Training Program Local 368, Lions Club began working together to plan the cleanup,” said Iwalani Sato, Community Relations Specialist and cleanup coordinator.  “The cooperation and partnership helps to keep our water resources, and more importantly families who use the bike path safe.”

Participants including ENV’s Storm Water Quality Branch, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Marines, State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, City and County of Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance, City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, HPD Community Policing, Lions Club, HECO, HPD, HPD Explorers, Hawaii Laborers’ Training Program Local 368, St. Elizabeth School, Kaneshiro Family, Tamayo Family, Aiea High Leo Club, Pearl City High Leo Club, Rep. Blake Oshiro, Rep. K. Mark Takai, Aiea Community Association, Forest City Hawaii, Kapolei High, Prudential Advantage Alliance, Aiea Intermediate, YMCA, Waipahu High, Weston Solutions, and area residents.
