Mayor Mufi Hannemann today welcomed the public to enjoy the first-ever Rediscover Makiki: Sunset in the Park event, to be held this Friday and Saturday at Makiki District Park.

The free community event, co-sponsored by the City, will feature a wide variety of fun activities and entertainment including movies, musical performances, food booths, crafts and a book sale.

The newly renovated Makiki Library will receive a blessing, and environmental exhibits and panel discussions will focus on the City’s new Sustainability Center, located in the same building.

“I’ve always believed that Makiki District Park would be an excellent venue for a Sunset in the Park,” Mayor Hannemann said. “This exciting two-day event promises fun and learning for the whole family, and everyone is welcome to participate. We’re very pleased that the Makiki Library and the new Sustainability Center are bringing this older facility back to life and making a positive contribution to the community.”

Rediscover Makiki: Sunset in the Park takes place from 4 pm to 10 pm on Friday, July 25; and from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday, July 26. Makiki District Park is located at Keeaumoku and Wilder streets.

Free movies include “Evan Almighty,” on Friday at 7:30 pm; and “Bee Movie,” on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

The event is presented by the City and County of Honolulu, Friends of the Makiki Library, Hui o Makiki Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Superferry, The Parish of St. Clement, Cox Radio's Power104.3 & Hawaiian 105 KINE, HMSA, Papa John's Pizza, and Coca-Cola Hawaii.
