WINNERS OF 23rd ANNUAL HOLIDAY WREATH CONTEST

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced today (Friday, December 5) that Marshall K. Fergerstrom’s wreath, “Ka Hôkû Â Davida (Star of David),” was named the overall best in show in the City and County of Honolulu’s 23rd Annual Holiday Wreath Contest.

Fergerstrom will receive the Mayor’s Holly Award and a $200 cash prize.  His wreath was selected from 82 entries submitted by island residents and community groups.  The wreath was created from recycled materials, including parts of a paper shredder, a discarded angel and scrap copper from Fergerstrom’s previous works of art.  The center of the wreath is shaped into the Star of David and is adorned with an angel.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Holiday Heroes,” in honor of the many heroes in our lives.  Judging of the wreaths was based on craftsmanship, creativity, and use of materials. The wreaths were judged by members of the City’s Commission on Culture and the Arts.  The wreaths will be on display in the Lane Gallery of Honolulu Hale through January 4, 2009.  The wreath contest display is one of the many culture and arts activities presented by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts each year.
