(October 26, 2009) - Mayor Mufi Hannemann was pleased today that City Auditor found that the Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor Project has complied with all procurement and contract requirements.
“I am very pleased to see that our rail transit project has been scrutinized by the City Auditor and found to be in complete compliance,” said Mayor Hannemann. “The audit shows that the oversight and management of the project have been sound.”
In the first list of findings, the Auditor encouraged the Rapid Transit Office to “remain vigilant in following existing procurement policies and regulations,” which validates the strict standards applied by the administration for this project. The Auditor’s findings also contained some areas for improvements that the rail transit project has already addressed. The issues raised in the report were to point out potential areas to address in the process rather actual problems found.
“This is one of the most vetted projects that this state has ever seen,” said Hannemann. “The audit shows that we are dotting our i’s and crossing our t’s, and that is important for the public to know.”
The City Auditor additionally recognized the Department of Transportation Services’ Rapid Transit division for its full cooperation and assistance during the audit.
The City’s responsible management of the transit project has already led to the Federal Transportation Administration’s approval for the project to enter into Preliminary Engineering, and the award of the first construction contract at $90 million less than projected.
