MAYOR ANNOUNCES TOURISM GRANTS
(Thurs., Dec. 10, 2009)—Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced the Oahu recipients of the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s County Product Enrichment Program (HTA-CPEP) grant awards for 2010. The HTA provides funding to Hawaii’s county governments to support events and projects that stimulate and diversify tourism.
“These grant awards help provide residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy traditional cultural events and unique new experiences,” Hannemann said. “As always, we had many more requests for support than we had money.”
The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) administers the Hawaii Tourism Authority-County Product Enrichment Program, providing grants annually to various Oahu non-profits. From its inception in 2002, HTA-CPEP has helped diversify and enrich Hawaii’s tourism product. Through the HTA-CPEP program, OED develops new and enhances existing community-based tourism events, experiences, attractions, and projects related to agriculture, culture, education, health and wellness, and nature or technology. The program complements Hawaii’s traditional resort product and assists in Honolulu’s economic diversification.
The City had $350,000 to award, and received 62 applications requesting a total of $1,714,254.
“We wish we could have accommodated more of the many worthy requests,” Hannemann said. “The selection committee labored long and hard to assess the proposals and made excellent choices.”
