(Friday, September 25, 2009) -- The third annual "A Taste of Kalihi" will showcase Kalihi's rich pride in a festive family celebration this Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Colburn Street between Waiakamilo and McNeil.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the best of my home town," said proud Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. "Join me and the people of Kalihi to discover the rich history and cuisine of one of Oahu's most vibrant communities."

A Taste of Kalihi is the neighborhood's annual block-party-style celebration that brings together business organizations, area residents and supporters to help promote and revitalize Kalihi.  Attendees can experience Kalihi's unique flavors through a sampling of the area's delicious fare, dynamic entertainment and exciting activities.

This year, participants will again have the chance to create the largest Cupid Shuffle and Electric Slide dance. There will also be mixed martial arts demonstrations, boxing, hip hop, breakdancing and cultural dance exhibitions as well as performances by On the Flip Side and Johnny's Rock Society Revival 2.

The Mayor's Kalihi Economic Summit in 2007 initially created this annual event, in close partnership with the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation and with the support of the Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate.

A portion of the proceeds from this festival will be donated to Helping Hands Hawaii and Friends of the Library of Hawaii Kalihi Palama Public Library.
