CITY TO BEGIN EXPANSION OF

EWA MAHIKO DISTRICT PARK

(August 5, 2009) – Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced that the City and County of Honolulu has awarded contracts for construction of a new gym, play courts, and parking lot at the Ewa Mahiko District Park, located on Renton Road on the site of the old Ewa Sugar Mill.

            Mayor Hannemann said, “We’re very proud to announce this project, which will provide much-needed recreational facilities to a rapidly growing part of Oahu.  Coupled with the City’s extension of Kapolei Parkway and other improvements we’ve made in recent years, this project will add immeasurably to the quality of life in Ewa and Kapolei.”

            Kurt Fevella, chairman of the Ewa Neighborhood Board, added, “This is welcome news.  We’ve been looking forward to having more park facilities in Ewa, especially a gym and play courts, and we’re grateful to Mayor Hannemann and the City Council for their support.  These facilities will give our young people and the entire community a gathering place for their sports and recreation activities.”

Construction will include a 10,440-square-foot gymnasium, multi-purpose building, two basketball courts, four tennis courts, two volleyball courts, lighting for all courts, accessible walkways, a 235-stall parking lot with lighting, and irrigation.

Project cost will be $8.3 million.  Construction will begin in early 2010 and be completed in late 2011.

The design consultant is Yamasato Fujiwara Higa & Associates.  The contract for construction was awarded to 57 Builders Ltd.
