Mayor Hannemann Announces Grants Awards for

Homeless Assistance and Domestic Violence Programs

Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced the release of $4,016,072 in Homelessness Prevention & Rapid Rehousing (HPRR) funds that was provided to the City and County of Honolulu through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.

"We are pleased that President Obama has made these stimulus funds available to our county at a time that many of our families are being challenged with homelessness," stated Mayor Hannemann.   "These funds will allow the county, through our partner service providers, to immediately assist families with housing, rental and financial assistance as well as other case management and housing referral services to prevent homelessness."

In addition to the HPRR grant awards, Mayor Hannemann also announced the release of $250,000 for programs to assist victims of domestic violence.

"I am alarmed and deeply concerned with what appears to be an increasing number of extremely violent and tragic incidences of domestic violence.  I am also fearful that these incidences may continue, and as the Washington Post has reported, '(I)t's not uncommon for rates of spouse abuse to increase during economic downtowns,'" stated Mayor Hannemann.

Mayor Hannemann also acknowledged the City Council for its appropriation of these funds which will be used to provide shelter, crisis and case management services for victims of domestic violence.
