In addition to the HPRR grant awards, Mayor Hannemann also announced the release of $250,000 for programs to assist victims of domestic violence. "I am alarmed and deeply concerned with what appears to be an increasing number of extremely violent and tragic incidences of domestic violence. I am also fearful that these incidences may continue, and as the Washington Post has reported, '(I)t's not uncommon for rates of spouse abuse to increase during economic downtowns,'" stated Mayor Hannemann. Mayor Hannemann also acknowledged the City Council for its appropriation of these funds which will be used to provide shelter, crisis and case management services for victims of domestic violence.
