MAYOR AND FIRST LADY TO WELCOME JAPAN ROYALS AT KAPIOLANI PARK
Mayor Mufi Hannemann and First Lady Gail Mukaihata Hannemann will today host Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan at 3:30 p.m. on their visit to Kapiolani Park, where His Majesty planted a shower tree 50 years ago.
“We’re very pleased to welcome such distinguished visitors to our city and to share our aloha with them,” Mayor Hannemann said. “Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have established a permanent link to Honolulu with the tree that His Majesty planted here in 1960, and it is touching that they have made it a point to visit this beautiful symbol of friendship.
“Our city crews from the Department of Parks and Recreation, and our Honolulu Police Department officers, have been working very hard to prepare for this auspicious occasion,” he continued. “We all want this visit to be a memorable one, especially since it will by the royal couple’s only official public appearance in Hawaii.”
Well-wishers are advised to arrive early.
