MAUNAWILI SPILL DOES NOT REACH RECEIVING WATERS

         Aug. 5, 2009 --- The City’s Department of Environmental Services responded to a sanitary sewer overflow this morning from a manhole in Maunawili.

         The call came in at 7:54 a.m., and the ENV crew arrived at the scene at 8:32 a.m.  The site was secured at 8:49 a.m.

         Roots caused the overflow at a manhole fronting 927 Auloa Road.  Approximately 1,375 gallons of untreated wastewater entered a storm drain.  The wastewater did not reach Kahanaiki Stream, but exited a culvert 200 yards away allowing the crew to recover some with the rest percolating in the ground.

         The City notified the state Department of Health.  Crews cleaned, deodorized and disinfected the area.
