STATEMENT OF MAYOR HANNEMANN

ON APPOINTMENT OF TAKAHARA-DIAS TO UH COACHING JOB

Honolulu Mayor and hoops-lover Mufi Hannemann today issued the following statement regarding the appointment of Dana Takahara-Dias, his Director of Customer Services, as the head coach of the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball team:

“I can’t tell you how proud and pleased I am that Dana Takahara-Dias has been selected to revitalize the Rainbow Wahine basketball program.

“Dana brings to the job her tremendous passion for the game; keen coaching instincts; the experience of having studied and worked under former coach Vince Goo as both an athlete and assistant; and success as the coach and athletic director at Moanalua High School.  She’s also been the mainstay of our annual Basketball Jamboree and Team Aloha, where she’s demonstrated her ability to spot talent and mold the state’s best players into a squad that’s competed against the best the mainland has to offer.

“She’s been a terrific administrator for the City, having been at three agencies, where she’s gained invaluable experience that’ll hold her in good stead as head of the UH program.  While her loss will be deeply felt, I believe this is a higher calling and one that she deserves.

“As a basketball player, former coach, and fan, and as someone who’s coached alongside her, I’m fully confident of Dana’s ability to recruit the best student-athletes, fill the Stan Sheriff Center, and restore the prestige and success of the Wahine program.”

Takahara-Dias will remain as Director of Customer Services until her successor is named.
