(Wednesday, November 18, 2009) – Mayor Mufi Hannemann today made the following statement regarding the selection of Louis Kealoha as Chief of Police:

“My congratulations and best wishes go to Captain Louis Kealoha on his well-deserved selection as Chief of the Honolulu Police Department.  Honolulu’s finest will have an exceptional leader at the helm of the organization, while our residents can be assured that he’ll bring strong and innovative leadership to his responsibilities.  I’m looking forward to collaborating with him on keeping Honolulu one of the safest big cities in the nation.

“Chairwoman Christine Camp and the members of the Police Commission did an exceptional job throughout the process and made a decision that was in keeping with the best interests of the people of the City and County of Honolulu.  Theirs was no doubt a difficult decision, given the outstanding candidates for the job, but their integrity, perseverance, and thorough evaluations ensured that the best person for the job earned their nod.

“I’m grateful to the men and women who offered themselves to this process.  They were all outstanding candidates and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their willingness to endure the rigorous screening process and their desire to serve our people.  I’m doubly grateful to Acting Chief Paul Putzulu for his work in leading the department during this time and for his candidacy for the chief’s position.  He’s been a standout leader and a welcome part of the Hannemann administration.”
