MAYOR HANNEMANN TO ACTIVATE NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS

Mayor Mufi Hannemann will activate new traffic signals at the intersection of Gulick Avenue and Beckley Street in Kalihi tomorrow (Thursday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m.).

“Installing these new signals is part of our comprehensive effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety across our island,” Mayor Hannemann said. “Combined with public education and police enforcement, these signals should help make our streets safer for everyone.”

The intersection is located near Kalihi Waena Elementary School. Traffic signals were installed primarily to improve safety for pedestrians, especially children walking to and from school. The project included curb ramps, pedestrian buttons, and pedestrian signals. Installing the signals cost $371,000.

The new traffic signals are currently being operated in “flashing” mode to warn motorists and pedestrians of the full March 19 activation.
