SMOKE TESTING IN ENCHANTED LAKE,
(Friday, Sept. 11, 2009) – Crews from the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services will conduct smoke testing of the wastewater collection system in the Enchanted Lake (Hele Street Basin) residential areas from Sept. 15-18 and 22-25, 2009.
This is part of the ENV’s preventative maintenance program to prevent rainwater from entering the sewer system. ENV crews pump smoke into sewer lines, examine whether any smoke escapes and record its location. The smoke used is non-toxic, harmless and has minimal odor. The smoke is not a fire hazard and does not pose a health hazard to humans or pets.
Tests locate broken pipes, illegal connections, open cleanouts and other paths for runoff that enter the sewer system. Runoff from heavy rain can overwhelm and surcharge the sewer system and treatment plants, causing spills.
ENV plans to smoke test Apokula Street, Auwaku Street (1399 and above), Hele Street, Humuula Street, Humuwili Place, Kaluli Street, Keolu Drive (1025 and 1051 only), Kina Street, Kupau Street (1198 and above), Kupau Place, Kuuna Street, Kuuna Place, Liku Street, Lekeona Street, Loho Street (1109 and above), Mapuana Street, Mapuana Place, Mowai Street (1077 and below), Nanialii Street (1225 and above), Noninui Place, Onaona Place and Onioni Street.
