THIRD PARTY CONTRACTOR CAUSES WASTEWATER SPILL

The city's Department of Environmental Services responded to a strong odor in Makaha this morning only to find that a third party contractor apparently caused a wastewater spill.

The call came in at 8:25 a.m. and the ENV crew arrived at the scene at 9:30 a.m.  The site was secured by 11:42 a.m.

The spill occurred at 84-621 Ala Mahiku Street, a vacant lot in Makaha.  Apparently, a third party contractor was doing work on the vacant lot, displaced a manhole cover, causing dirt and debris to clog a 12-inch vitrified clay pipe, which allowed 2,675 gallons of untreated wastewater to overflow onto the property.

The City notified the state Department of Health.  The spill did not reach receiving water nor was it a threat to public health.
