25th Annual Holiday Wreath Contest

"Kalakoa Kalikimaka"

(Thurs., Dec. 2, 2010)Kathy Tosh has been selected to receive the Mayor's Holly Award for her wreath entitled, "You Never Know What You'll Find on a Walk." She will receive a ribbon and a $200 cash prize. Her large wreath is made out of dried plant material, paint, ribbon, and Mardi Gras beads. Kathy works for the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens and has won the grand prize for two consecutive years.

This year's theme, "Kalakoa Kalikimaka A Holiday of Colors," recognizes the 25th anniversary of the Holiday Wreath Contest.  Forty-nine entries were received from residents throughout Oahu. Judges Grant Kagimoto and Laurie Callies from the City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts had a difficult time selecting the awards from the many outstanding entries. Wreath evaluation was based on craftsmanship, creativity, and use of materials. Fourteen wreaths were entered in the Adult Category, 19 in the Youth Category and 16 in the Theme Category.
