MAYOR ANNOUNCES AIEA GYM VANDALISM REPAIRS COMPLETED
(Tues., Feb. 16, 2010)—Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced that the Aiea Gym will be re-opened today following completion of repairs to vandalism that occurred last November.
“It’s very sad that the selfish acts of some irresponsible person or persons deprived so many students and other residents of their neighborhood gym,” Hannemann said. “The good news is that this important facility has been restored and returned to the community. We trust that everyone will do what they can to ensure that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
The gym’s floor sustained major damage when someone flooded it with water from a fire hose after breaking in during the early morning of November 8, 2009. The gym, in Aiea District Park, had been closed for one month while its entire lighting system was replaced; the vandalism occurred the day before the facility was scheduled to re-open.
Drying, dehumidifying and monitoring the gym floor cost $22,870. Patching and sealing the floor and applying a new coating cost $4,900.
The closure forced the relocation of international badminton and gymnastics tournaments, disrupted basketball league play, and displaced hundreds of gym users.
