(June 8, 2010) --- Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced today that, not one, but two, musical theater productions are slated for the Blaisdell Center later this year.

Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast” will play the Concert Hall in late September.  And Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Cats” will run December 28-January 2.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have these quality Broadway productions come to Honolulu,” Hannemann said.  “Since the popular and successful run of  ‘The Lion King,’ we’ve been patiently waiting for the return of Broadway shows to the Blaisdell.”

Beauty and the Beast has been seen by more than 35 million people worldwide in 21 countries.  This production reunites the original creative team from the original Broadway production.  Beauty and The Beast will visit the Blaisdell Concert Hall for just 16 performances September 21 to October 3.

Cats, winner of 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical, will visit for just 8 performances December 28 to January 2.

“Given the demand we’ve seen for top-quality family shows like these we expect tickets to go fast,” Hannemann said.

There are two big incentives to buy tickets now.  First, the opening night of both shows are priced 30-40% below prime weekend performances.  Second, both shows have two performances with a 50% discount for kids.  We usually see our Honolulu ticket buyers wait until the last minute but I don’t think that will be the case this time, at least until these performances are sold out.

Tickets for both shows go on sale this Saturday, June 12.
