CITY TO CONDUCT ISLAND WIDE PARKS CLEAN UP

(Friday, May 7, 2010) --- Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced today that the Department of Parks and Recreation, assisted by nearly 5,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints under the banner “Mormon Helping Hands,” will conduct a clean up of dozens of City parks on Saturday, May 8th.

“It’s always great when members of our community step forward and volunteer to help maintain our parks,” said Hannemann.  “We work hard to keep our parks safe and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.  I appreciate it when people take some pride in and ownership of what is really their parks, and I applaud the community service of the members of the Mormon Church.”

Workers will remove trash, trim hedges, rake leaves, paint and otherwise spruce up parks at 51 selected sites within DPR’s five island districts.  Sandy Beach Park, all beach parks along the Leeward Coast, Kualoa Regional Park, the Waipio Soccer Complex and the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park are among the parks scheduled for work.

The Department of Environmental Services will work with DPR to pick up and dispose of trash bags and bulky items on both Saturday and next Monday.
