Dragon boat races will have teams consisting of a crew of 16 paddlers, a drummer, flag catcher and steersman.  There are two race categories, the open race and division, which consists of teams competing for an industry trophy.  Entry fees have been waived, thanks to grants and private donations.  Race and festival information is available by calling Alenka Remec at 768-4249.

"The Dragon Boat Festival has grown to become one of the summer’s most popular events," said Mayor Hannemann.  "We have merged this exciting race competition with a family activity and want everyone to join us.  The Festival and races and the Sunset program and movies are all free, so this is an opportunity for our families to spend quality time together without spending a lot of money."

Sunset on the Beach will feature free Blockbuster movies on a huge 30-foot screen ("Alvin and the Chipmunks" on Saturday and "Alice in Wonderland” on Sunday), live entertainment, face-painting, a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band, keiki inflatable rides, crafts, community booths, and local ono food booths.  Barbecuing will not be permitted within the Sunset site.

This year’s added activities include Dragon Boat Grass Volleyball Tournament from 8 am to 6 pm and Dragon Boat Futsal soccer from 10 am to 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
