FINAL CURBSIDE RECYCLING COMMUNITIES TO RECEIVE CARTS

(Monday, Feb. 1, 2010) – The City’s Department of Environmental Service will be delivering recycling carts to nearly 42,000 homes starting tomorrow in the fourth and final phase of its island-wide curbside recycling program set to begin the week of May 3.  Only homes currently on automated refuse collection will be receiving carts.

“We’re entering the homestretch to complete the vision we set in motion a few years ago to have island-wide curbside recycling,” Mayor Mufi Hannemann said.  “This is just one more step as we continue to make our island home more environmentally friendly and fulfill the goals in our 21st Century Ahupua‘a sustainability plan.”

Green and blue carts will be delivered to homes from Waikele to Makakilo, Waipahu, Ewa Beach to West Loch, and from Honokai Hale to Makua.  The delivery process takes about 10 weeks.  Residents should place the carts on their property and not to use them until the May start date.

Instructional brochures will be attached to the outside of the blue mixed recyclable carts.  Residents are encouraged to thoroughly read over the informational materials before calling the Refuse Division.  For additional information, go to www.opala.org or call 768-3200.
