STATEMENT OF MAYOR MUFI HANNEMANN

ON THE PASSING OF CHARLIE WEDEMEYER

(Thursday, June 3, 2010) --- “My heart goes out to Lucy and the Wedemeyer ohana.

“Charlie Wedemeyer’s athletic achievements were the stuff of legend in island sports.  I remember watching him dazzle opponents and fans on the football field and basketball court as a multi-sport all-star at Punahou School, and those remarkable talents earned him a prominent place among the greatest athletes Hawaii has ever produced.

“But the competitive, can-do spirit that earned him plaudits in athletics served him well when Lou Gehrig’s Disease took its toll early in his adult life.  Despite his many years of hardship and suffering, Charlie, along with Lucy, showed us the ‘true grit’ that made him such an exceptional athlete.  He inspired us with his courage, lifted us with his message of hope and perseverance, and demonstrated that life’s challenges were no obstacle to enjoying the fulfillment and blessings of family, friends, and the things he loved.”
