RESPONSE TO STATE DOH PRESS RELEASE
(Fri., Dec. 24, 2010)—The City and County of Honolulu and its Department of Environmental Services are aware of the recent permissible pumping of rainwater into a storm drain basin by Waste Management following last Sunday’s torrential rainfall.
Waste Management, which has a permit to conduct such mitigation, notified the state Department of Health as a professional courtesy Monday morning. DOH inspectors came to the landfill Tuesday and raised no issues or concerns.
This is a section of the landfill that had been covered with at least 10-inches of soil on Saturday prior to the storm. In addition, this type of mitigation is provided for in Waste Management’s permit and conducted throughout the U.S.
