MAYOR CARLISLE WELCOMES THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT

(Thurs., Jan. 6, 2011)— Mayor Peter Carlisle today officially launched the City’s Month in Chinatown, a series of events preceding the commemoration of this year’s Lunar New Year of the Rabbit.

The mayor was joined by leaders of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Chinatown Merchants and the United Chinese Coalition and the ARTS at Marks Garage to announce plans for the upcoming celebrations.

“Chinatown has always been an important place to me,” said Carlisle.  “First as City Prosecutor and now as Mayor, I want Chinatown to remain a safe, historic and cultural center that attracts residents and visitors alike. It is my pleasure to join our many partners and invite everyone to enjoy the Chinatown celebration.”

The Year of the Rabbit officially begins on February 3, but traditional observances will take place throughout January.  A private-public partnership has worked together over the past year, pooling resources, to create another round of fun and family-friendly events.  These include lion dances, fireworks, exhibits, Chinese singing and dancing, martial arts demonstrations, feng shui displays, fortune-telling, and a wide variety of food that represents the rich diversity of the Chinatown community.

Event organizers have published a 32-page information booklet that includes a full calendar of events, a handy map of the neighborhood, and information about the Year of the Rabbit along with many exciting discounts and offers.  Booklets will be available at the ARTS at Marks Garage during their business hours.

The public can also learn about the celebrations by visiting www.ChintownHI.com.
