WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE "KANIKAPILA KALIKIMAKA!" WREATH CONTEST

(Fri., November 30, 2012)—The Mayor's Holly Award winner, as part of  the City's 27th Annual Holiday Wreath Contest, is the Hawaii State Hospital Occupational Therapy Department Art Class with a wreath titled "Sweet Memories of the 70's Kanikapila Hawaiian Style!"

Organized by the Mayor's Office of Culture and Arts, the wreath contest awarded the top prize of $200 to the art class for most ingenious wreath creation.  The patients at the Hawaii State Hospital Occupational Therapy Department Art Class, titled "Sweet Memories of the 70's Kanikapila Hawaiian Style!" uses color reproductions of vintage posters, T-shirts, and backstage passes from the 1970s Hawaii music and entertainment scene including the Brothers Cazimero, Kalapana, Country Comfort, Booga Booga, and the beloved Diamond Head Crater Festivals; also used are found and recycled materials like driftwood, pinecones, kukui nuts, coconut husks, seed pods, shells, and lei.

Seventy-three entries were received this year from all over Oahu. Three commissioners from the City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts, Roy Benham, Paulette Kahalepuna, and Pamela Taylor-Tongg had a difficult time selecting the awards for the many wreaths. Judging was based on craftsmanship, creativity, and use of materials. Twenty-six wreaths were entered in the Adult Category, 28 in the Youth Category, and 19 in the theme category.
