MAYOR CALDWELL TO ANNOUNCE WINNERS OF LION CUBS NAMING CONTEST
AT LION CUBS’ OFFICIAL DEBUT TOMORROW
The event will take place tomorrow, April 6, at 8:30 a.m. at the Honolulu Zoo’s lion exhibit. The winning children will read their haiku then the lion cubs’ new names will be announced. At 9 a.m., when the zoo’s doors open, the cubs will be released into the exhibit marking their official public debut.
The three cubs, one male and two female, born to mother, Moxy and father Ekundu on December 15, 2012, are healthy and acclimating well.
The lion cubs naming contest was sponsored by the Honolulu Zoological Society. About 600 children from various schools throughout the state, ages 8-13, submitted their original haiku which were judged by staff from the Honolulu Zoo, Honolulu Zoological Society, and Service Systems Associates. One winner was chosen from three separate age group categories. Each winner selected a name for the cubs.
The three winners and their classmates, friends, and family will join Mayor Caldwell at the lion cubs’ debut.
“The birth of three lion cubs here at the Honolulu Zoo is a rare occasion,” said Mayor Caldwell. “The winning students wrote beautiful haiku and selected very special names for the cubs. The cubs are a wonderful addition to our Zoo family and we hope everyone will come to visit them and watch their progress and growth.”
Last week, Mayor Caldwell had the rare opportunity to hold the lion cubs with zookeepers’ supervision. Today,
