ALAPAI TRANSIT CENTER RESTROOMS TO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TOMORROW

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today that the restrooms at the Alapai Transit Center will be open to the public every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. beginning tomorrow.

"Ever since the Alapai Transit Center opened bus riders have had to hunt for places to use the restroom," said Mayor Caldwell.  "Sometimes they missed their bus.  The walk could be too far for seniors.  There were limited options early in the morning or late at night.  I felt that this had to stop.

"I thank the dedicated employees at the Departments of Transportation Services and Facility Maintenance for working together to come up with a solution.  Though cleaning, maintenance, and security will not be free, this is the kind of service a city should provide."

The Alapai Transit Center has men's and women's restrooms on the ground floor with two stalls in each.  Security guards will open the restrooms at 5 a.m. and lock them at 11 p.m. daily.

About 200 buses and over 2,000 passengers pass through the Alapai Transit Center every day.  It opened in August 2012.
