Hanauma Bay closed early today due to water leak

Hawaii Kai – The Department of Parks and Recreation announced that Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve closed at 3 p.m. today to accommodate emergency repairs necessitated by a potable water leak under the commercial bus parking lot.  In addition, the park was closed to sightseeing buses all day today.

Park workers this morning discovered that the surface of the commercial bus parking lot was softening and identified an underground leak.

The park remained open today until 3 p.m. for personal cars, taxis, and pedestrians.  Sightseeing buses were turned away.  TheBus dropped passengers off at the top of the park along Kalanianaole Highway.  Officially permitted scuba and snorkel tour vendors continued to operate in the car lot.

The entire park had to be closed at 3 p.m. in order to shut off the park’s water supply for repairs, which affects the bathrooms.  Parks and Recreation crews anticipate completing repairs tonight and reopening the park at 6 a.m. tomorrow.  The commercial bus parking lot will remain closed until 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Normally, the park closes at 6 p.m. this time of year (7 p.m. during the summer).  The leak is only affecting the bus parking lot and not the nature preserve below.
