MAYOR CALDWELL APPOINTS MARK D. WONG

TO BE DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced his nomination of Mark D. Wong, founder of Commercial Data Systems, the largest Hawaii-based IT company, to be Director of Information Technology.

"This is a major hire for the City & County of Honolulu," said Mayor Caldwell. "Mark brings an incredible wealth of IT and management expertise as founder of one of the largest information technology companies in Hawaii.  We are very fortunate to have his knowledge and ability as we modernize the city's outdated IT infrastructure and streamline the Honolulu.gov website."

"It is an honor to join Mayor Caldwell and his team in creating systems that offer comprehensive access to city services, increased productivity, and greater security," said Director-designate Wong.  "Management of information is a key component of the Mayor's plan for a more transparent and effective government, and I am eager to address the many areas in which we can use technology to improve life in Honolulu."

Wong founded Commercial Data Systems (CDS) in Honolulu in 1986 and ran the company as CEO until its sale in 2012.  CDS was ranked #89 in the Hawaii Business Top 250 for 2011 and expanded to have offices in 13 states.  CDS specialized in large systems for major corporations and federal, state, and local government.

Wong's expertise includes design and coding of software systems, network and security design, operations management, fiscal and legal management, and project management.  He has served on the boards of many non-profits and has chaired major charity events such as the Heart Ball, the Symphony Ball, and the MDA Soirée.

Wong received a B.S. in Computer Science from Yale University and is a graduate of Iolani School.
