Mayor Caldwell to hold vigil for victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Honolulu — Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today that the City & County of Honolulu will hold a candlelight vigil for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan this Friday, Nov. 22, beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the civic center grounds of Honolulu Hale.  The event is open to the public.

Mayor Caldwell will be joined by Julius D. Torres, Consul General of the Philippines; Rose Churma, President & COO of the FilCom Center; and community members in honoring the victims of this recent tragedy.

Participants will hold a candlelight vigil following a moment of silence for the victims.  The vigil is part of the “Aloha for Philippines” campaign supporting relief efforts underway in the Philippines.

“Typhoon Haiyan brought unimaginable devastation to the people of the Philippines,” Mayor Caldwell said.  “The City & County of Honolulu is coming together to show our aloha for our friends in the Philippines in this time of great need.”

Nicole Velasco, Executive Secretary of the Neighborhood Commission Office, will serve as the MC for the event, which will feature the Royal Hawaiian Band playing a selection of mele from the Philippines.
