Winners announced in city’s annual holiday wreath contest

Honolulu—Tomy Takemura won top honors in the city-sponsored 28th annual Holiday Wreath Contest with her entry, “Spectacle with Tentacles.”  Takemura’s wreath depicted an octopus amid a collection of glass fishing boats on an ocean of seaweed, highlighting this year’s theme, “Blue Hawaiian Holidays.”

A total of 73 entries were judged by three commissioners from the city’s Commission on Culture and Arts: Betty Kam, Fernando Pacheco, and Dana Anne Yee. Judges based their selections on craftsmanship, creativity, and the use of materials.

The Mayor’s Holly Award, a grand prize of $200, will be awarded to Takemura during the mayor’s tree topping ceremony today, Friday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. on the lawn fronting Honolulu Hale.
